A better understanding of the mechanisms involved may help game managers better retain their customers. In this study, we explore the factors that fuel gamers' continuance intention. Based on social capital and social presence theories, we conducted a survey of 1,467 online gamers. We found that network convergence and interdependence significantly influenced gamers' sense of community and the relational switching cost.

Influence of in-game social interaction on gaming disorder

Researchers are exploring the relationship between in-game social interaction and symptoms of gaming disorder. This social interaction can take many forms, including communication between gamers and in-game guild/group activities. By measuring how often respondents communicate with other gamers and what they do together, they can assess the amount of in-game social interaction. This can also help identify whether gamers are delving into unhealthy behaviors, such as pathological gaming.

The present study found that online social capital and in-game social interaction were both associated with an increased risk of gaming disorder. However, the positive impact of in-game social interaction was moderated by high levels of alienation. Consequently, the relationship between in-game social interaction and gaming disorder is more complex. The findings suggest that individuals with high levels of social alienation should consider pursuing offline social activities in order to establish good real-world social relationships.

Effects of alienation from family, peers, and school on gaming disorder

A recent study conducted on the relationship between parental and child alienation and problem gaming found that positive parent-child relationships and positive perceptions of the family environment were associated with a lower risk for problem gaming. Positive parent-child relationships and parental supervision were also related to reduced risk for problem gaming. In contrast, alienation from family and school was associated with greater levels of problem gaming over time. By the third year, the parent-child relationship was significantly worse for problem gamers than it was for non-problem gamers.

Aside from examining the effects of parental alienation, there are other factors that may be associated with problem gaming. Alienation from family, peers, and school may reinforce shame, and may result in an isolation of adolescents from their parents. Parents should consider the impact of such factors on children's gaming behavior and seek a holistic treatment that takes into account family dynamics. Furthermore, parents should consider how they relate to their children to understand how to best support and intervene.
