Work and the Emoluments of Labor

Many people find it difficult to understand the concepts of work and the place it occupies in society. For those who are still confused, it is important to realize that work has a place in all societies. Without work, life would be difficult and would come to a standstill. Indeed, work plays an important role in any society.

According to Webster's Third New dictionary, the act of working is "the act of putting forth physical effort or ability". According to William James, the work of human beings is divided into three categories, the laboring classes, the paid laborers and the unpaid laborers. According to the dictionary, the word labor is derived from the German word linjekop, meaning work done for the satisfaction of wages. Therefore, to put it simply, work is defined as the activity of earning wages or other forms of payment in exchange for work done.

There are many occupations that fall under the category of work. One of these is the job of work. To be employed in any occupation, it is necessary to have certain skills; some may be very visible while others may not be so obvious. In order to excel in a particular occupation, it is important to possess certain skills. However, the most essential skill to possess in any occupation is that of being able to manipulate objects. Being able to manipulate objects properly is what makes a person successful in his work.

Work can either be formal or informal in nature. In the former case, when we speak of "work", we imply that the work performed by a person is something done with a sense of organization and planning. Examples of such work are those which take place in the office, schools and hospitals. In the latter case, the work takes the form of informal activities. Examples of these include leisure time which is spent in conversation, sport, and recreational activities.

In the last analysis, work can either be formal or informal, but it always involves the exploitation of natural forces. The terms work and labor are synonymous, and the former refers to the extraction of goods and services that have been produced by people while the latter refers to the extraction of such goods and services by people who are engaging in intensive labor. The term work has various other meanings, depending on the context in which it is used. However, in the United States of America and in most parts of the developed world, work typically refers to physical labor, including work done by employees in the course of their employment and work which are ordered by the employer.

As you can see from the previous sentence, labor is an ingredient that describes the extraction of goods and services which were produced by human beings. It is worth noting that although the word "labor" has several senses, in most cases the English language uses only one. Thus, we have "worked," "worked overtime," "finished works," "received promotions" and "worked in the yard."
