Two Drills That Show How to Throw 80 mph With a Loose Swing

In the spring of 2021 I was asked to participate in a drill designed to measure and compare the speed of a fast ball and a slow ball. The purpose of the drill was to find differences in the average throwing speed of a fast ball and a slow ball, regardless of speed. The testing was two sessions; one session measured fast ball speeds and the other measured slow ball speeds. A throwing program was devised using the same protocol and the same form of drills as the fast ball drill. The hitting report covers the analysis and evaluation of the fast ball sessions.

The methodology involved two measurements; one was conducted at the hitting machine and one was conducted with the players standing. In the hitting machine test, the player threw a ball to a target which is located on the batting cage wall. Then the participant stood and participated in the drill. A video camera was used to monitor the participant's performance and the screen was pre-recorded so that the data could be reviewed later. The player's throw was then analyzed using radar guns and the results were measured using radar gun velocities vs. bat speed.

The second part of the hitting report deals with the pitcher's performance. For this part of the report, the pitcher participated in a live pitching practice session. The player participated in a standard wind tunnel session with coaches from both teams. The coach allowed each pitcher to toss a dry piece of bread (which had been provided by the coaching staff) to the pitcher while he threw without his glove. The purpose of this activity was to allow each pitcher to develop a slow, loose swing.

Based on the video analysis, it was determined that the pitcher's slow loose swing gets around the ball on the third pitch. Because the velocity measurements were much slower than the actual throw, the pitcher was able to generate the bat speed needed to hit the ball and successfully complete the at-bat. This is important because the pitcher was able to get back into the swing before fatigue set in and prevent him from throwing strikes.

These two observations are very important to those who wish to throw 80 mph with a loose swing. They also help athletes with their fielding actions because the athletes are able to better judge distances on swings. So it would seem that these two drills presented above can help all baseball players improve their overall game play.
