History - Understanding It

History is an accumulation of knowledge about the past. The study of events taking place before the invention of written language is called prehistorical history.

Prehistorically, "history" refers to the memory, collection, analysis, documentation, and interpretation of historical information. In its broadest sense, it also includes the arts and sciences, which are not part of history, but play an important role in preserving knowledge about the past. Because most historians work as publicists for the past, they are often called "historians of the present."

Some historians believe that humans are not born with a general idea of time and history, because the process of learning and information acquisition is largely unconscious; so when we learn about the past, we may not be able to apply what we have learned from our experiences to the events that took place at that moment. In other words, some historians say that humans are born with the instinctive understanding of history, but it does not require a conscious effort to understand the past or draw conclusions about it.

Another view of the nature of human information acquisition is that it is relatively random and is not systematically organized by people who have an interest in organizing it. In this view, people do not make use of any particular time period to organize their experience. This view is sometimes referred to as "chaotic" history. Many other historians regard this view as not only unhistorical but also incorrect in that it ignores the fact that people's lives change over time and that these changes affect the way they think about the past, and the way they view their own lives and those of others.

There are various theories about how the human mind produces history. Some theorists believe that the history that exists in the mind of the individual consists of the memories of previous events that occur in the individual's life, the experiences of the individual, the impressions and perceptions of others, the thoughts that have been accumulated over time, and the beliefs that the person holds about his or her own life. Individuals are much like the history of the world in that they are a part of it. As a part of the larger whole, individuals make history through their choices, actions, and choices of the people around them, and the things they experience. The information that individuals collect about the past, as they learn about it, helps them to make a plan for their future.
